What most people do not realize is there is a hidden population of tax executives unable to make the connections they need to be hired into a Head of Tax role. With a track record of more than one thousand tax executive placements over thirty years, we have developed a program that ensures the tax executives with the requisite technical and interpersonal skills have access to these top tax jobs. We have developed a tax executive search strategy to ensure connections for tax executives occur.
Over the years, we have encountered tax executives whose lives have changed dramatically due to a retiring CFO who they shared a great relationship with and now a new CFO has arrived who has a different view of the tax function. Their view is to reorganize the tax function further from the CFO and have tax report to someone else. This type of change always frustrates a Head of Tax because they need to be close to what the business is doing, so they can create more tax savings for the company. In all honesty, it is often the less experienced CFO who calls and realizes by not involving the Head of Tax in the transaction upfront results in loss of tax savings. The lesson to learn here is that the relationship between the Head of Tax and the CFO is critically important in an organization. When the CFO and the Head of Tax work closely together on complex corporate business transactions the magic happens. There is always a greater cost to an organization who does not have tax reporting to the CFO.
We have encountered tax executives who have no imminent path to Head of Tax because their boss is years away from retirement and they are not going anywhere. This results in their career as Head of Tax being stalled. They are frustrated and want to Head up their own corporate tax function. What action can they take that ensures the utmost privacy, so they do not lose their current job. We developed a program that gives tax executives increased access to Head of Tax opportunities and maintains a very high level of privacy. What most tax executives learn working with us is that they need to protect their privacy more than ever. Companies you are engaged with online are selling your data and engagement to monetize your activity. LinkedIn has a program that sells your engagement and activity online to employers for a fee. How do you feel about that? LinkedIn, Google, and Meta all profit from your data and activity on their sites. There is a way to protect your privacy when searching privately for a new job. Contact ki***@******ch.com for more information how we protect you on a Head of Tax search.
There is another important aspect to consider when searching for a Head of Tax role. We have discovered a trend of tax executive compensation posted on online job boards lower than what tax executives are currently making. This is resulting in many tax executives unwilling to come forward to interview with the company, or many companies spending a lot of time interviewing tax executives only to lose great Head of Tax candidates in the offer stage wasting everyone’s time. Even worse are the companies who focus on hiring a tax executive who fits into the company’s desired salary range and not the technical skills the tax executive candidate needs to be successful in the Head of Tax role. All these issues must be addressed on the front end of every Head of Tax search.
